Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the biochemical composition of two sea snakes species (Hydrophis caerulescens, H. schistosus) collected during the pre-monsoon (Mar to May) 2018 to the Northeast monsoon (Dec, 2018. to Feb. 2019) from the landing area of Sonmiani Bay, Damb coast of Baluchistan, Pakistan. Significant seasonal variations were observed in the biochemical components (protein, lipids, and carbohydrates) among the two species of sea snakes. The high concentration of protein found in H. caerulescens during the pre-monsoon season 45.06%, but lipid was present at a very low level at 2.71%, and carbohydrate at 4.97%. In H. schistosusthe concentration of protein in the pre-monsoon season was 47.85%, lipid was 2.39%, carbohydrate was 4.66%, and moisture content was 61.29%. In contrast, during the Northeast season, these two species show much variation in accordance with biochemical aspects. The concentration of protein in H. caerulescens (2.99%) and H. schistosus (3.85%) was significantly lower during Northeast season as compared to the pre-monsoon.
